George Floyd
October 14, 1973 - May 25, 2020
Today, on the anniversary of George Floyd’s tragic murder at the hands of the police, we remember his life and acknowledge the enormous work that lies ahead. When his killer’s guilty verdicts were read out, it was an important moment for long-overdue police accountability, but it falls far short of anything resembling justice. For George Floyd’s family and innumerable other victims of racially-motivated violence, we must remove the structures that support these acts of violence so that we may achieve actual justice - an end to police killing Black people. Tragically, in the short week after the verdict was delivered, Ma'khia Bryant in Ohio, and Andrew Brown Jr. in North Carolina were killed - and Isiah Brown in Virginia is still in the ICU after being shot by police.
These atrocities were committed by a system that claims to protect, and it is glaringly apparent this is not true. NYCGMC stands with and alongside all of our Black members. We are committed to unearthing and dismantling harm within our own organization, so that we may transform our community and be part of eradicating the systems and structures rooted in white supremacy. While we’ve made a start, investigating crucial policies and procedures, there is so much more to do. We recognize that becoming an anti-racist organization is not a one-time activity, but a call to action to commit ourselves to the hard work, day-in, day-out, and into the future. On the occasion of the anniversary of George Floyd’s death, we mark this pivotal moment with deep respect and solidarity.
The George Floyd Memorial Foundation was founded by the Floyd family to continue his legacy. The Foundation is rooted in the relationships of individuals, groups, and organizations committed to amplifying George Floyd's story through organized community outreach, targeted educational programs, intentional reform initiatives, awareness of social justice subject matter, and civil rights protection for all people of color. We encourage everyone to utilize the resources they provide. An excellent list of additional resources has also been compiled by our friends at The Center, which can be found here.
